Datost lives where your team already works. The primary way to interact is to @Datost in a channel, continue the conversation in a thread, or DM the app directly. Every question opens a thread, and Datost keeps the context of that thread in mind as you follow up.

Where you can talk to Datost

1

Public or private channels

Type @Datost followed by your question. Datost replies in a thread under your message so the channel stays tidy.
@Datost what was our MRR last week compared to the week before?
2

Inside a thread

Mention @Datost in any thread and it will read the thread as context before answering. Short follow-ups like and by plan? work because Datost re-uses the surrounding discussion.
3

Direct message

Open a DM with the Datost app and send a message — no @mention needed. DMs and the native Slack AI Assistant sidebar both route to the same brain.
4

Slack Assistant sidebar

When you open Datost from Slack’s built-in AI assistant panel, we pre-populate suggested prompts based on the channel you came from: Summarize context, Key decisions, Open questions, and Draft reply.
In a thread you can drop forwarded messages from other channels into your @Datost question. Datost will fetch the forwarded thread and reason over it alongside your prompt.

Follow-ups keep context

Every reply within the same Slack thread is treated as a continuation. Ask the broad question first, then narrow down:
@Datost top 10 accounts by revenue this quarter
@Datost now just the ones on the Enterprise plan
@Datost export that as a CSV
Very short follow-ups (under 10 characters) are interpreted as a request to act on the existing thread context, so @Datost why? works as expected.

Reactions Datost listens for

1

❌ to cancel

React with :x:, :heavy_multiplication_x:, or :negative_squared_cross_mark: on a running Datost response to stop it. Datost aborts the work, edits the message to Query cancelled, and adds a :white_check_mark: confirmation.
2

:mag: to investigate

React with :mag: on any message in Slack — even one not addressed to Datost — and Datost will treat that message as a new question, pulling in the surrounding thread as context. Great for “wait, what does this mean?” moments.

Attachments

Datost reads what you share alongside your mention:
  • Files (CSVs, images, screenshots, PDFs) attached to the mention are passed through for review.
  • Forwarded messages from other channels are fetched, including replies in the source thread.
  • Native Slack tables embedded in the message are parsed as structured data.
Datost shows a “Reviewing the attachment” status in the Assistant sidebar so you know it picked up your file.

Rate limits

Each workspace ships with per-user defaults of 20 queries/hour and 100 queries/day. Workspace admins can tune these in the Datost admin settings.
When you hit the limit, Datost replies with You've reached the query limit. Please try again in N minutes. Cancelled and failed queries still count.

When things go wrong

  • No response at all — Datost only answers in channels it has been invited to, and only if your workspace admin hasn’t blocklisted the channel. Invite the bot with /invite @Datost.
  • “Coming soon” reply — your organization isn’t fully activated yet. Reach out to your Datost contact.
  • Trial ended — an admin needs to re-enable the workspace from the Datost web app.
Prefer the web app for long reports or when you want to inspect SQL and raw rows. Every Slack answer has a “View full response” link that opens the same query in your browser.
